The Rise and (hopefully) Fall of Normcore

Normcore. I first heard it through a tumblr mutual. I laughed. I did. I laughed it off because honestly, I felt that tumblr had created a new word. I felt the fashion bloggers had a secret meeting to discuss something new for 2014. But when I caught sight of it on other sites, I started to realize this wasn't just a blogger having fun. It was more.

Normcore is dad clothes. Honestly! I think of suburban dad who works as a professor coming home to sit down and talk with his friends about baseball and hockey. I see soccer mom grocery shopping. I see babysitters from the 80's lounging around the basement talking about their latest new job. It's odd. Normcore is just normal clothes. But normal clothes for who? It seems to differ for people of different backgrounds. Not everyone wore "normal" clothes like button-downs and ugly nikes from the 90's. The normcore trend seemed to hot at first. Anyone could get down with wearing dad jeans and a baseball cap. But as it progressed later this year, people have started to wonder how normal could normcore be? When the fashion week hit, power suits and bland colors littered the runway to show off the normcore look.

But what's normal about a price tag of thousands of dollars for normal looking clothes? The price isn't normal. In fact, its abnormal.  How many of us could go to our mom or dads closet and pull out a boring t-shirts, old sneakers yellowing with age, and flimsy mock turtlenecks for free? With many people confused about what normcore actual is, I thought I'd be the one to say. It's nothing that will last. I can see it happening now. As people put on these power suits, they glance to Zara and see the same boring tan trench on a display. When ladies put on her their moms old jeans, they'll flip through a magazine and see an American Apparel ad. Yes. I know. It's always fun to create a new style. It shows that you're a fashionista but soon there will be something new. By the way, has anyone heard of health goth?

These pictures don't belong to me.
